We’re Here Today

We’re Here Today is an original comic based on the story of a former U.S. Army Lieutenant who served in Europe during World War II. Imagery was based on this soldier’s original equipment as well as a newspaper clipping regarding his actions which awarded him the Silver Star. This comic was designed for the San Diego State University Word Balloons book, a compilation of student’s original comics. The comic brings attention to the things some men and women have had to perform in order to bring themselves home, while still showing this aspect of their life in a bold and interesting graphical style.

The soldier’s original equipment was used as reference for him to differentiate from the other American soldier in the comic. The Silver Star citation for the basis of the story is as follows.

“He voluntarily went forward of our lines to interrogate an enemy, waving a white flag, evidently intent on effecting a surrender. Accompanied by an enlisted man, he proceeded cautiously forward when two other enemy, concealed from their view, opened fire on them, revealing a trap. He and his companion succeeded in killing all three of the enemy before returning to safety of their own lines.”
